In 1952, inhabited by a desire to return to an ideological form of “Sacred Art” and enchanted by the Romanesque chapel in the Castle at Vallauris, Picasso decided to erect a “Temple of Peace” there with a monumental composition entitled “War and Peace”.
The work is comprised of two panels of over 100 m2 portraying the horrors of war and the benefits of peace. Another panel was added at the far end of the chapel to make the link between the themes ; it symbolizes the cult of peace between the nations.
